Evelyn May Monger
Evelyn Monger, 98, passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Born in Sioux City, IA to Charles and Victoria Dougherty, she was the eldest of six children. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Nursing School in Iowa as a Registered Nurse, she moved to Los Angeles, CA where she worked at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital during WWII. Soon after, she frequented the Zenda Ballroom, a social venue for Navy service men on leave, where she met her future husband, Lloyd Monger. Six days after his discharge from the Navy, they were married in the Los Angeles Cathedral on October 25, 1945. Five days later, they moved to Lloyd’s hometown, Steamboat Springs. Together they built a home in the lower Elk River valley and raised five children, Larry, Vernon, Kenneth, Doug, and Donna Mae, where they lived together for 59 years until Lloyd’s passing in 2004. Evelyn’s children and grandchildren were her greatest joy. She constantly stressed the importance of education and being a meaningful and contributing member of society. She was especially pleased to watch all of her children graduate from college. Together with Lloyd, they prided themselves on teaching their children the value of dedication and hard work. For being a long time rancher’s wife, she did not enjoy riding horses or having animals as pets, but she did not shy away from helping on the ranch. As an outstanding homemaker, she loved to bake breads & desserts as well as cook home style meals. Together, Evelyn and Lloyd traveled the US in their motorhome, spending the winters in Yuma, AZ and visiting other countries when possible. As their grandchildren were an important aspect of their life, they made it a priority to visit all of them, attending everything from sporting events to graduations. Evelyn was passionate about giving back to the Routt County community. She started the Fairplay 4H club, served as a superintendent for Clothing Construction and volunteered in the Exhibit Hall during the Routt County Fair. She was also involved in the Hospital & American Legion Auxiliary, dedicating time on Memorial Day to place flags on veteran’s graves and on Veteran’s day selling Poppies. She devoted herself to the Catholic church and was a long time member of the Altar & Rosary Society. After learning about the benefits of exercise at 65, she became a regular at the pool through her 80’s. Although she had never learned to swim, water aerobics became a daily routine. In addition to socializing with her friends, she loved to play Poker, Bridge, crochet, and craft. Her husband, Lloyd, son Kenneth, her parents and all of her siblings, precedes Evelyn in death. She is survived by her sons Larry (Mary Kay), Vernon (Mikki), Doug (Lauretta), daughter, Donna Mae (Steve) Hoots, 13 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life for both Evelyn and Ken was held May 7th at the Holy Name Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Routt County 4H in care of Grant Mortuary.

Evelyn Monger, of Steamboat Springs, died Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at The Doak Walker House at Casey’s Pond. A Conjunction Mass of Christian Burial for Evelyn and Kenneth Monger, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 7, 2016 at The Holy Name Catholic Church. Memorial donations for Evelyn may be made to the Routt County 4H in care of Grant Mortuary. Memorial donations for Kenneth may be made in his name to Alpine Bank to benefit carious Steamboat Youth Organizations. A private burial will take place in Elk Mountain Cemetery.
