"30" FOR WM. McCABE. Editor of the Eagle County Times Dies at St. Luke's Hospital, at Leadville, of Pneumonia.
William McCABE, editor of the Eagle County Times at Red Cliff, died of pneumonia at St. Luke's hospital, Leadville, last Friday night.
On Tuesday, election day, after returning to Leadville from Red Cliff, he complained of feeling tired, and the next day remained in his room. On Thursday morning he had developed a severe case of pneumonia and was removed to the hospital. The best attention was given him, but he was unable to resist the inroads of the disease, and on Friday evening, about 11 o'clock, he breathed his last. His wife, who had been telegraphed for, arrived Friday morning and was with him in his last moments.
During the campaign Mr. McCABE has been actively engaged in politics, and edited in addition to the Eagle County Times the Lake County Progress, which he started during the campaign in Leadville.
He was born about forty-nine years ago, and came to Colorado in the later '80s. For a time he worked in the mines about Red Cliff and at railroading. Later he founded the Eagle County Times, which he has conducted with his sister, Fannie, who died in 1904, and his brother, Ed, who died about two months ago. In the '90s he published the Breckenridge Bulletin for about a year.
"Billy," as all his friends and associates knew him, was very popular with everybody. He was a brilliant writer and good newspaper man.
The deceased is survived by a widow, who was at his bedside at the time of his death, and three children, two of whom are at present in Grand Junction with their grandmother.
The remains were shipped to Red Cliff Saturday night, the funeral taking place on Sunday. His body is resting besides those of his sister, his brother, and the oldest son, Myron, who was killed a few years ago in a hunting accident.
