Nicholas Ross Massaro

Nicholas R. Massaro, a dedicated educator for more than 50 years in the Roaring Fork Valley, passed away at his home in Grand Junction, CO on February 25, 2016. Massaro was 88. A lifelong educator, Nick came to Basalt, CO from Denver in 1950 as a teacher, coach and principal of Basalt High School. After teaching for two years at Lakewood High School in Lakewood, CO, he returned to the Roaring Fork Valley as principal of Glenwood Springs High School. Nick then served as Assistant Superintendent, and then the Superintendent for Roaring Fork School District until retirement in 1983. He continued his commitment to students and his community as the Chief Administrator of the L.S. Woods Charitable Trust, a Roaring Fork Valley based education fund providing millions of dollars in the form of grants and scholarships to hundreds of students. In addition, the Roaring Fork School District set up the Nick Massaro Education scholarship program and named a wing of the elementary school after him. Nick was born, the youngest of three boys, to Quentin and Helen Massaro in Denver. They predecease him, as do his two brothers, Paul and Robert. He attended Wheat Ridge High
School excelling at baseball and winning a state championship in basketball. He joined the Navy in World War II, serving on
the USS O’Brien in the South Pacific. After the Navy, he attended the University of Denver for undergraduate and graduate school. Nick valued above all his family, friends and community. He had a lifetime of community service with The Lions Club, Old Timer’s Association, Italian-American Club and as a volunteer at St. Mary’s and Valley View Hospitals. His love of educating continued by teaching seniors the AARP’s 55 Alive driving course. Nick loved the Broncos and especially collecting on winning bets from his friend Charlie. He found joy in cooking up skilletini for the family, teaching the grandkids to play poker and cheering on the teams at JUCO. The annual outings with the Mother’s Day group were one of his favorite traditions. He was known for his warmth and sense of humor, though some say his success rate in the latter was mixed. Nick is survived by Sharon, his wife of 28 years, and 10 children, Nick Massaro, Mike (Ruth) Massaro, Tony (Sue Brown) Massaro, Chris (Cindy) Massaro, Liz (Steve) Bailey, Sam (Laura) Barrows, John (Bobbi) Barrows, Bob Barrows, Joe (Janelle Carsten) Barrows, and Becky (Eric) Gerritson. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara. Visitation will be from 5 - 7:00 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1st at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction. A Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 noon on March 2nd at St. Stephens in Glenwood Springs with burial at RosebudCemetery and a Celebration of Life to follow at Hotel Colorado. Nicholas Ross Massaro, 88, Grand Junction, died Feb. 25, 2016, at his home. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Callahan Edfast Mortuary. Services will be at noon Wednesday at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Glenwood Springs. Burial will follow at Rosebud Cemetery, with a reception after that at Hotel Colorado. Mr. Massaro was an educator and superintendent for School District RE-1. Survivors include his wife, Sharon A.; eight sons, Nick Massaro Jr. of Grand Junction, Michael Massaro of Mill Valley, California, Tony Massaro of Denver, Chris Massaro of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Robert Barrows of Littleton, Samuel Barrows of Almaty, Kazakhstan, John Barrows of Colorado Springs and Joseph Barrows of Grand Junction, two daughters, Elizabeth Bailey of Lakewood and Becky Gerritson of Wetumpka, Alabama; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions to the Nicholas R. Massaro Scholarship Fund, in care of Roaring Fork School District RE-1, 1405 Grand Ave., Glenwood Springs 81601.
