WM. DIXON DIES OF AN ACCIDENT.
ALONE ON HIS PINEY RANCH HE SUSTAINS FATAL INJURIES AND IS NOT FOUND FOR TWO WEEKS.
Wm. Dixon was found dead, and alone, in his ranch house on Dixon creek near Piney lake last Thursday, when neighbors became alarmed at his long absence from Minturn and went in to investigate.
Mr. DIXON had gone up to the ranch on Nov. 4, intending to stay but a few days to put things in shape for the winter, taking along food sufficient for not more than a week. When he did not return Don MATHESON and Jas. CLINE of Minturn and Matt INGRUM of Gore creek went in to investigate. They found Mr. DIXON in the home dead. Investigation indicates that he fell from the hay loft of the barn, after throwing down hay for his horses, and struck his head on an iron pipe railing, fracturing his skull. This railing showed blood and hair from the deceased man's head. The livestock in the barn were tied to the mangers, and their condition showed they had been there for some time with nothing to eat or drink.
He had managed to get to the house, but how long before he died is not definitely determined. However dishes and food on the table indicate that he had had but two meals in the house. So that it is deducted that the accident occurred on the second morning he was there, the 5th of November.
Mr. DIXON was born in Beloit, Wis., in 1858. He came to Colorado early in life and had lived in Eagle county for close to fifty years. He was a telegraph operator, and worked for the Rio Grande railroad in that capacity for a number of years, at one time being agent at Wolcott.
He retired from railroad work some thirty years ago, and homesteaded the land on which he died. He and his wife have made that their home since. The only known surviving relative is his widow, now living in Minturn.
Funeral services in charge of Mortician Andre were held in Minturn on Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. W. BARTRUG of Eagle delivering the discourse. The body was laid to rest in Riverside [sic Riverview] cemetery in Minturn.
