George Nelson Yost passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Aug. 2. He is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Roxie (Rich) Deane, of Eagle, and Raenette (Bill) Johnson, of Eagle; four grandchildren, Cindy (John) Ramunno, of Eagle, Debby (Ron) Beard, of Eagle, Cassie (Adam) Tormohlen, of Denver, and Andy Johnson, of Edwards; and five great-grandchildren, Hayley Beard, Rick Ramunno, Mike Ramunno, Jaycey Beard and Marley Tormohlen. George is preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife, Lena. George was born in Dotsero on Jan. 24, 1926, to George S. “Doc” Yost and Frances Bucar Yost in his family home. He spent his childhood helping his mom run the Dotsero post office and the Dotsero grocery store. Against his mother’s wishes, George was always playing and swimming in the Colorado River. He could be seen diving and jumping off the Dotsero Bridge into the river below in the warm months, and skating on that same river during the winter. His dog and best friend was always by his side.
After graduating from the Eagle County High School in 1943, George enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he became a trained pilot. After his stint in the USAF, George met the girl of his dreams when he walked into 1st National Bank in Glenwood Springs. Lena Sansosti was working as a teller, and George walked right up and stole her heart. The two married on Dec. 4, 1946, and shared a lifetime love that very few get to experience. George worked for State Incorporated, where he ran big construction projects including the Climax Mines project near Leadville, and the Henderson Mines project near Empire. George and Lena worked hard, but also led entertaining social lives. Those who knew George knew he was the salt of earth. He was generous to those he knew, and was friendly and welcoming to everyone, no matter their background or lifestyle. His humor and one-liners will remain with his family and be passed down for generations. His quick wit and wisdom will be missed. His family sought his advice daily on construction, automobile repair and purchasing, and finances. He was adored by his family and was a great husband, brother, son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and man. A private graveside service will take in Eagle. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in George’s memory to the Eagle Valley Humane Society, PO Box 4105, Eagle, CO 81631.
