JESSE SHERMAN BURIED IN EAGLE TUESDAY.
Funeral services were held in Eagle February 2 for Jesse E. SHERMAN, who died in Community Hospital in Glenwood Springs January 31, following a three-weeks illness. Mr. SHERMAN, who would have been 89 years of age February 14, had been in perfect health, until he became ill three weeks ago.
Services were conducted in the Eagle Methodist Church by Rev. Delbert PAULSON, and funeral music included vocal solos by Mrs. Margie WENTZEL accompanied on the piano by Bob TREZISE.
Burial was in the family plot in Eagle under the direction of the Bowman Mortuary.
Pallbearers were Harold ROWBOTHAM, J. D. ALLEN, Fred COLBY, John and Harry LEWIS and H. D. McCAIN.
Mr. SHERMAN was born at Belvidere, Ill., February 14, 1864. He was truly an American, his forebears dating back to Revolutionary Days. His grandfather was a direct descendant of Roger SHERMAN of Vermont, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. His grandfather migrated from Vermont in the early 1800s to the timber frontier of Wisconsin, where Mr. SHERMAN's father, Reuben, was born, a first cousin to General Tecumseh SHERMAN.
His mother was Elizabeth Jory SHERMAN, member of a pioneer Illinois family.
Reuben and Elizabeth SHERMAN had four children, three boys and one daughter: John, Emma, Jesse and George. Jesse SHERMAN was the last surviving member of this pioneer family.
The family came to Denver, Colorado about 1871, where they lived for several years; then to Pueblo and to Leadville in 1879. Mr. SHERMAN and his younger brother, George, owned and operated the Sherman Brothers Dairy and Feed Store in Leadville from 1890 to 1900.In 1901 they purchased the cattle ranch on the Eagle River four miles above Eagle, which was known for many years as the Sherman Brothers Ranch. They were outstanding pioneers in the successful development of potato and grain production in the Eagle River Valley and the Western Slope of Colorado.
They sold their ranch in 1918 and a few years later George SHERMAN passed away in Glenwood Springs. Since 1918, Mr. SHERMAN lived in Eagle, devoting his time and interest to the financial and agricultural development of the Eagle River Valley. He was an ardent fisherman and was happiest when accompanying his friends and nephews on fishing trips into the high lakes of the Rockies.
Mr. SHERMAN married Gertrude MILLER in Leadville in 1897,and they enjoyed a very happy married life for many years. Mrs. SHERMAN died in March, 1933.
Mr.SHERMAN, as his wife, have many friends who will continue to remember and respect their memory. Their true companionship and loyalty to one another was an outstanding symbol of devotion.
His closest surviving relatives are the three sons of his sister Emma Sherman GARLINGHOUSE: Leslie H. GARLINGHOUSE, Laguna Beach, Calif.; Ralph L. GARLINGHOUSE, Lihue, Kauaii, Hawaii; and Albert F. GARLINGHOUSE, South Pasadena, Calif.
D. M. KOGER, a close friend who had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. SHERMAN for many years, also survives.
