One of the Vail Valley’s most visible and endearing lights was extinguished Jan. 7, when longtime Vail Valley local and active volunteer Barbara Treat died at the Vail Valley Medical Center Hospice Room, following a six-month battle with stomach cancer. She was 61.Born in Canada and raised in an orphanage just outside Toronto, Treat left the orphanage at age 16, traveling to Toronto, where her quick mind and strong work ethic helped her immediately excel. She began her professional career as an assistant at Hiram Walker spirits, moving up quickly through the ranks before joining a Canadian stock brokerage firm. She would eventually create her own executive recruitment firm.In 1979 Barb met Sandy Treat at a tennis match and the two married in 1982. The couple retired in 1986, moving to the Vail Valley where they helped organize the 1989 World Alpine Ski Championships. This was the beginning of Barb’s long career as an volunteer.
Treat was a volunteer coordinator for the Vail Valley Foundation for 16 years, managing the registration operations for events including the American Ski Classic, the World Forum and the Birds of Prey World Cup, along with all four World Championships the Foundation organized. In 2003, Barb was honored as the Vail Valley Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year.Along with her volunteer duties for Foundation events, Treat also spent a few hours on the phone each week in the Vail Valley Foundation offices, talking to new Vail Valley residents as part of the organization’s Welcome Wagon Program.In addition to her work with the Vail Valley Foundation, Treat also served on the board of directors for the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, the Family Learning Center, the Women’s Resource Center and the Literacy Project, while also donating her time to the Heuga Center.
An avid golfer, Treat co-founded the Vail Valley Junior Golf Association in an effort to ensure that all children will have the opportunity to experience the sport. Always up for an adventure, she made an appearance in the 2003 Vail Undressed calendar. Treat is survived by her husband Sandy; her stepchildren Sandy Jr. of Vail, Colorado, Cynthia Hollister of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Leslie Treat of Newport, Ore., as well as her grandchildren Will Hollister, Ben Hollister, Allison Hollister, Andrew Hollister, Andrew Treat, Sandy Treat IV, Kristen Treat and Ariana Treat.A memorial service will be held Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Beaver Creek Chapel, with a reception following at the Vilar Center for the Arts, hosted by the many Vail Valley charities that Barb supported.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the newly-created Barbara Treat Foundation to benefit children throughout the Vail Valley. The Vail Valley Foundation will manage and take donations for the Barbara Treat Foundation.Vail, Colorado
