TIMBER ACCIDENT KILLED FRANK ROBERTSON.
Frank ROBERTSON, 56, Colorado River district man, was found dead under a felled tree on Red Dirt, shortly after noon Friday. His chain saw lay beside him, the switch on, out of gas.
Sheriff Hank KNUTH reconstructed the tragedy: Mr. ROBERTSON, working for Buffington and Cook in the timbered area of Red Dirt, had felled the first tree in the stand.He had topped and limbed the tree, and it apparently was held partially aloft by one large limb. The Sheriff said ROBERTSON had evidently used his power saw to cut off the hindering limb, and in so doing the tree rolled over on ROBERTSON when it was released.
His body was found by his employers around 1 o'clock, when they went into the timber to begin skidding.
Mr. ROBERTSON had lived in the Sweetwater-Burns area since 1935.
He was born in Star City, Ark. March 1, 1903 and attended school at Dumas, Ark. At the age of 17, he came to Salida with his brother, Burt, to work in coal mines.
He moved to the Eagle County area, working with the D&RGW railroad, then to the Colorado River district to work on ranches in that vicinity.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Funeral services were conducted by Reverence H. C. MOOREHEAD Nov. 11, at the Gypsum Methodist Church, and burial was in Gypsum.Arrangements were directed by Bowman Mortuary of Eagle.
Mr. ROBERTSON is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Eula JACKSON and Mrs. Thelma WEBB of Amarillo, Tex. and Mrs. Manie GOINS of Pine Bluff, Ark., and one brother Burt of Los Angeles.
Here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Tillman WEBB and Mrs. JACKSON, Mrs. GOINS and son, J.L., and out of town friends Mr. and Mrs. Harold COULTER, Grand Junction; Elbert Schultz, Arvada; C.L. MIDCAP and the RAUCHFUSS family of Denver.
