Bill Loeffler, a part-time Vail resident and cinematographer with NFL Films for 38 years, died at his home on Feb. 22 after along struggle with tongue cancer. He was 74. Loeffler, born in Denver in 1930, joined the U.S. Air Force shortly after graduating from Denver’s South High. He later became a private pilot, flying a Cessna 182. He began his career as a cameraman in 1954 filming college football for the University of Denver and the Air Force Academy. In 1960 he began his work with professional football when the Denver Broncos joined the newly established American Football League.

During his career, Loeffler filmed several Super Bowls, including the first Super Bowl in 1967. In 1995 he was awarded an Emmy in cinematography for his work with NFL Films. Loeffler’s cinematography career extended beyond his work with NFL Films. He produced and filmed documentaries on a wide range of subjects. He also did a weekly segment in the early ’80s for the University of Colorado.Loeffler, whom friends and family members describe as an avid skier, skied Vail the year it opened. His wife, Jinny, began teaching for the Vail Ski School in 1966.

Loeffler watched his last Super Bowl a couple of weeks ago in the company of his family. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jinny; his three sons, Mike Loeffler, Ted Loeffler and Charlie Loeffler; a daughter, Suzy; and sisters Lenore Albi and Lucille Allen. Loeffler also is survived by many longtime friends in the Vail area.A celebration of Loeffler’s life is scheduled for 11 a.m., today at the First Plymouth Congregational Church in Denver.
