Geneva Gonzales, who lived several years in Avon and Eagle County, died Friday in Grand Junction. She was 74.

Gonzales was born in Chihuahua, Mex., Jan. 17, 1930, to Guadalupe Fierro and Romulo Gonzales.

She moved to the United States, eventually settling in Colorado where she raised a family of eight children.

She returned to Mexico briefly, but when her children all settled in the area and launched careers, she moved to Eagle County to stay.

Her family said she was a woman of strength and spirit, who loved cooking for her children and grandchildren, especially when they came to visit.

Gonzales is preceded in death by her father, who died a little more than a year ago. Her mother is still living, residing in Mexico.

She is survived by husband Nicanor Gonzales and her eight children: sons Manuel Torres, Hilario Torres, Ismael Torres and Angelo Torres; and daughters Socorro Chavez, Efinelia Gil, Guadalupe Vasquez and Baudelia Pinela; brothers Romulo Gonzales; and sisters Ofelia, Juana, Carolina and Guadalupe.

She is also survived by 33 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

The rosary is scheduled for 10 p.m. tonight at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Eagle. The memorial mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, also at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Eagle. Burial will follow at the Eagle Cemetery.
