Elbert Paul Schultz, 83, of Gypsum, died Aug. 29 at his home on the Colorado River. Schultz was born Dec. 26, 1920 to Herman and Alice Schultz in a cabin on Red Dirt, along the Colorado River. His childhood, school years, and early working years found him alongside his brothers at the family sawmill and cattle ranch business on the Colorado River. He was drafted and served in the U. S. Army during World War II, from 1942 to 1946.Schultz married Ruth M. Dunn on June 29, 1946 in Roxboro, N.C. He moved his bride back to the Colorado River Ranch, where three of their four children were born. He moved his family to Arvada, where he lived until his retirement from the United Packing Company in 1981. Ruth died in 1983. Elbert then married Helen M. Crisler in 1984. She died in 2001.Elbert always had a home on the Colorado River and moved back in 2001 to live out his life there.Schultz enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, friends and family members said. He is survived by daughters Linda Angove of Berthoud and Anita Rickard of Wheatridge; sons James “Buster” Schultz and David Schultz of Gypsum; a sister, Ruth Jacox of Gypsum; and a brother, Herman “J.R.” Schultz of Golden; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his wives, a grandson, Mark A. Schultz, and nine brothers and sisters preceded him in death.Funeral services were held Sept. 3, in Wheatridge.
