SARAH ROGERS BURIED IN EAGLE WEDNESDAY.
Sarah C. HUTSELL was born in Rockwood, Tenn., July 26, 1875, and moved at the age of nine to the Indian Territory near what is now Stillwell, Okla.
She assumed the position of head of the family during her teens, because of her mother's ill health and was both mother and sister in rearing her younger brother and two sisters. She had many harrowing experiences in dealing with the Indians, actually repelling them with rifle fire on occasion. The young Sarah was a true pioneer and had an active part in the payments to the Indians before opening the strip for white settlement.
In 1905 the family moved to Denver, Colorado, where in 1907 she was married to Joseph DESCHANE and about a year later made a temporary move to Minnesota because of Mr. DESCHANE's failing health. When her husband died a few months later, she was left with a three-months old son, Clarence.
Moving back to Colorado, she resided in McCoy until 1910 when she was married to William ROGERS and moved to Eagle where she resided until her death. Mr. ROGERS passed away in 1951. To this later marriage was born one son, Wayde, who has stayed with Mrs. ROGERS during her failing health and her death.
For several years, Mrs ROGERS had been afflicted with hearth trouble. On June 6 she suffered a stroke and was taken to Porter Hospital in Glenwood Springs, where she died June 13.
She leaves besides her two sons, one sister, Mrs. Maud MITCHELL of Eagle; four grandchildren, Robin and Dwight ROGERS; Felix DESCHANE and Mrs. Joyce BULLOCK three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. E. BULKLEY in the Eagle Methodist Church Wednesday, and burial was in the Eagle Cemetery, directed by Bowman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Chester MAYER, Hans LARSEN, Fred COLBY, Roy PEATE, Charles BYERS and George CARLOW.
