Amalia Chavez, 88, passed away Tuesday at Sangre de Cristo Hospice Center in Pueblo. Mrs. Chavez was born on March 24, 1920, in Lucero, N.M. Her parents were the late Epifanio and Ruperta (Espinoza) Montoya.Amalia went to school in Lucero and then, as a young woman, she moved to Gilman, where she married Arthur A. Chavez. Mr. Chavez worked in the Gilman Mine while Amalia raised their family of eight. Eventually the family moved to Red Cliff.A marvelous cook, Mrs. Chavez was never happier than when she was cooking for her large family. She also enjoyed reading, gambling, gardening and watching baseball. Amalia’s favorite pastime was playing bingo. Mrs. Chavez was a member of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Red Cliff. She was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society and was active with the Minturn Senior Citizens Group. About 10 years ago, Amalia moved to Pueblo where she lived with her daughter.Mrs. Chavez is preceded in death by her parents; husband Arthur, who died in 1994; her son, Richard Chavez, who passed away four years ago and one grandson, Loren Fox. She is survived by her daughters, Beverly (John) Brndiar, of Edwards, Rosella (Joe) Montoya, of Pueblo, Arlene (Anthony) Cordova, of Edwards, Janice (Walter) Fox, of Red Cliff and Alice (Gary) Perdue, of Pueblo; sons Lawrence (Linda) Chavez, of Denver, and Ernest (Hazel) Chavez, of Grand Junction; and daughter-in-law Frieda Chavez.Mrs. Chavez is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.The Rosary will be recited on Friday at 7 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m., both at St. Patrick’s Parish Center in Minturn. The Reverend Hugh Guentner and Deacon Mike will officiate.Amalia will be laid to rest next to her husband in Greenwood Cemetery in Red Cliff. Pallbearers will be Jarod and Arthur Fox, Ernie Chavez, Jr. Darrell Chavez, and Randy and Joseph Montoya. Honorary Pallbearers will be Derrick and Adam Montoya, Conner Cordova, Daniel Chavez and JoVaan Vigil.Arrangements are being handled by Bailey Funeral Home in Leadville.Following the interment in Red Cliff there will be a reception at the Berry Creek Middle School in Edwards.Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Sangre de Cristo Hospice Center, 1207 Pueblo Blvd. Way.
