Eagle Valley Enterprise - November 26, 1964

Cecil R. Childress, 41, died early Saturday morning in Valley View Hospital of injuries received in a crash within Eagle city limits at midnight on Friday.
Childress was a passenger in a car driven by Gary Ray Greene of Fort Morgan. Th car was traveling west on Highway 6-24 at a high rate of speed and ran off the right shoulder, went into a broadside skid. It hut and broke off a telephone pole, then the front end spun around and hit railroad rails, throwing Childress out of the car. The car then spun around backward and rolled on its side.
During the course of the car's bounding around, it hurt a guard rail that had been fashioned from railroad rails to protect the D&RG section house on the north side of the highway, flipping a heavy rail against the side of the house. It is occupied by the section foreman and his family.
This particular house is apparently ill-fated. Friday night's accident was the second time a careening car hit the building. The time was when Mr. and Mrs. Tony Palese lived there. The side facing the highway was bashed in, and at that time, Mr. Palese put up railroad rails to protect the property.
Greene received cuts and bruises. He was driving with driving while intoxicated and with reckless driving. he was fined by Justice of the Peace Lucile Lieber, $175 and costs and 30-day suspended jail sentence.
Both men were employed by Western Slope Lumber Co. in Eagle. Childress was a native of Alabama and is survived by three children living at Mt. Home AFB in Idaho. His body was shipped by Farnum Mortuary for burial in Centerville, Alabama.
