Funeral set for Sunday
A funeral for Joseph Chonko is schedule for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Grace Brethren Church in Martinsburg, PA. There will be viewing hours from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bolger Funeral Home, also in Martinsburg.
Local services for Chonko are schedule for 4 p.m. Feb 19 at the third-floor cafeteria at Eagle's Nest on Vail Mountain.
Chonko, 28, formerly of Martinsburg, PA, died Tuesday after a snowboarding accident. He was found Wednesday.
He was an East Vail resident.
Chonko was born Aug. 27, 1972 in Roaring Spring, PA, a son of Robert J. and Nancy L. (Lockhart) Chonko.
He was a member of Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church and attended Calvary Chapel in Edwards. For the past four years, he lived and studied at the Sanctuary in Vail. Chonko worked at a mountaineering shop in Vail and was formerly employed at Spring Canyon Military Retreat in Colorado.
Chonko was a 1991 graduate of Martinsburg Central High School, and a 1995 graduate of Messiah College, Grantham, PA with a bachelor's degree in chemistry.
He enjoyed snowboarding, as well as mountain and ice climbing. Chonko was a volunteer at Urban Promise, Camden, NJ and was a former member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Surviving are his parents, three sisters, and grandparents.
