Don Nelson, 86, of
Johnstown, passed away at his
home on Monday, July 4,
2016.
He was born August 7, 1929,
in Manzanola, CO to Albert I.
and Bertie L. (Bartow)
Nelson. He attended schools
in Manzanola, Delta and
graduated from Palisade High
School as Salutatorian and
class president. He also played football and wrestled.
He married Ruth Alice Moss on September 14, 1947, in
Palisade. While in Palisade, he worked the peach orchards. He
moved his family to Climax to work at the Molybdenum Mill &
Mine. Eventually, he became employed with Public Service
Company of Colorado on the survey crew. He had an
opportunity to transfer to Denver with the company and
eventually joined the team at Fort St. Vrain as an electronic
technician. In 1970, Don settled in Johnstown with his wife and
two youngest children. He retired from Public Service Company
in 1986. Don and Ruth traveled around the US, Alaska and
Canada for 20 years, wintering in Arizona and enjoying tennis,
golfing, hiking and relaxing in the hot tub.
Don was a former member of the Johnstown Fire Department,
Johnstown Town Board and Trustee/Building Committee at the
Johnstown UMC. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Loveland
Elks Lodge.
Amongst his many hobbies, Don enjoyed fishing, boating,
hunting, reading, woodcarving, fly tying and playing cards as
well as spending time with family.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; children, Susan (Bill) Warren
of North Carolina; Donna (Kermit) Huff of Greeley, and
Deniece (Duane) Cook of Johnstown; 12 grandchildren, Brian
Nelson, Kristina Senecaut, Sara Forsythe, Shannon McCleave,
Becky Merritt, Elizabeth Morris, Vanessa DeMott, Jennifer
Kilner, Chris Tregoning, Robbie Huff, Donald Cook and Travis
Cook; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild;
brother, Randall Nelson, and sister, Lois Ann Sylvia.
His son, Douglas, as well as several brothers and sisters
preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at
the Johnstown United Methodist Church. A reception will
follow.
