Funeral services were held Friday for Russell S. Carter, who died March 23 at Vail Valley Medical Center after a long illness. He was born July 19, 1916 to Cora and Joe Carter in Leadville. His family later homesteaded in the Squaw Creek area, where he lived until his death. He joined the Army in 1941 and served his country in WWII for four years. In 1948, he married Wanda J. Terry. He worked at the sawmill on Squaw Creek and then at the Gilman mine until his retirement in 1970. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping until his illness began to slow him down. However, his illness didn't keep him from playing his favorite card games. Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Wanda Carter of Wolcott; four sons, Dan and Rick Carter of Denver, Terry and Dave Carter of Edwards; two daughters, Linda (Jerry) Hayes of Eagle; Charlotte (Randy) Hobbs of Sweetwater; two brothers, Sam (Betty) Carter of Edwards, Joe (Mary Ann) Carter of AZ; two sisters, Alma Case of Grand Junction, Theo Terry of Oregon; and mother-in-law Nina Terry of Gypsum. 15 grandchildren, two and one-half (one's on the way) great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nephews, nieces also survive. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents, brothers harry and Bob and sister Buena Case. Funeral services were held at the Eagle Community Methodist Church with Pastor Don Lagge officiating. The American Legion bestowed military honors. he was laid to rest at Sunset Cemetery in Eagle by his family and friends who loved him dearly. Farnum Holt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
