Merrell J. Clausen of Gilman was buried January 7 in Evergreen Cemetery. He was born March 30, 1920 in Clear Lake, IA and was a graduate of Drake University in Des Moines and upon graduation married Mary June Howard in 1942. He enlisted in the Second World War joining the Army in 1943. He saw action in Central Europe, Northern France and in the Rhineland. Following the war, he became office manager for a hospital, in Des Moines, then worked for a trucking company then operated a cafeteria in Estes Park, CO before coming to Gilman in 1969 to work for the New Jersey Zinc Company. Mr. Clausen was involved in many activities of service to the communities where he lived. He was a past commander of AmVets, a member of the Lions Club of Colorado, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Optimist Club at Estes Park. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary June; a son, Danny in the Air Force at Burkburnett, TX; and a daughter, Mrs. Dianna Kehl of Estes Park. Pallbearers were Hugh E. Riley, Jack Johnson, Bernard Schegel, Willis Bowman, Frank Sherwood, and Everett Ritchie.
