Andrew David Claymon, 16, of Edwards, died July 5 in Arnold, Neb., after an 18-month fight against chordoma, a very rare form of cancer.
He was born on Aug. 31, 1993, at the Vail Valley Medical Center in Vail. Left to cherish the memories he gave us are parents Mike and Joni (Davenport) Claymon and brother Brian Claymon of Edwards; grandparents Jim and Sherry Davenport of Arnold, Neb.; grandfather Allan Claymon of Cincinnati, Ohio; and great-grandmother Mary Davenport of Loveland.
Andrew also loved spending time with his many aunts and uncles and their families: Randy and Julie Bailar of Arnold; Jeani Davenport of Arnold; JoDee Kimball of Columbus, Neb.; Bridget Kimball and Ryan Sewing of Omaha; Dan Davenport of North Platte, Neb.; Jeff and Jennifer Drey and Calvin, Nicci, Mason, Mac and Lexie of Omaha, Neb.; Jimmy Davenport, Nikki Harter, Angelina and Austin of Arnold; Ryan and Jacque Porter and Kacey of Lincoln, Neb.; and Doug and Deborah Boeschen and Sam and Henry of Saint Helena, Calif.; and cousin Chani Dahlberg of Greybull, Wyo. Andrew also had many, many friends, especially in the Vail Valley and in Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by uncle David Claymon of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandmother Susan Claymon of San Francisco; and uncle Michael Davenport of Denver.
Andrew caught his first fish when he was not quite 2 years old at Merritt Reservoir near Valentine, Neb., and was hooked on fishing ever since. He loved to spend time in Nebraska fishing out of any pond, gravel pit or lake that he could find. He participated in a youth fishing tournament in Ogallala, Neb., with his friend and fishing partner, Steve Olofson, for the past five years, winning first place in 2004 and third place in 2008. One of his wishes that was fulfilled this spring was to own his own fishing boat – the Walleye Whacker. Andrew enjoyed many days on his boat this spring and early summer in Texas, Missouri and the past few months at Merritt Reservoir. Andrew also thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and hunting. He spent many school vacations hunting near his grandparents’ home in Arnold. Andrew had the unique experience of a successful elk hunt in the fall of 2009 on a private ranch in Colorado.
Andrew was a junior at Battle Mountain High School in Edwards and participated in many athletics during his life including lacrosse, ice hockey as both a player and as a referee, basketball, baseball, roller hockey, tennis and many others and was an accomplished young athlete.
After stopping curative treatment in December 2009, Andrew courageously lived his life to the greatest extent possible and was able to fulfill many wishes including owning his own fishing boat, several duck and goose hunting adventures in Grand Junction, and numerous fishing outings in Colorado, North Dakota, Texas, Missouri and Nebraska. He spent most of the last two months of his life at his favorite place on this earth, Merritt Reservoir. There he lived out of a camper with his parents, fished as often as possible, and also was able to work his “dream job” at the Merritt Trading Post Resort for a brief time period in May and June. Andrew was known for his glowing smile, bright blue eyes and witty sense of humor, something that he was able to maintain until his last hours.
Visitation will be held at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arnold, Neb., from 1-5 p.m. Friday. Services will be as follows: a wake service (including informal story telling about Andrew) at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Agnes Catholic Church, a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Catholic Church, graveside services and burial at the Arnold Cemetery immediately following the Mass, and a luncheon following the graveside services at the Arnold Community Center.
A memorial service will also be held in the Vail Valley in the very near future, and the details have yet to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to be made to the Andrew Claymon Memorial Fund at any FirstBank of Colorado location or at Pinnacle Bank in Arnold, Neb. These funds will be distributed to various organizations that Andrew was involved with (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Children’s Hospital in Denver, etc.).
