Jean Moores, 84, Gateway, died June 10, 2016, at home.
Visitation will be at noon Saturday at Martin Mortuary. Services
will follow at 1 p.m. at the mortuary.
She was a rancher.
Survivors include two sons, Craig, and Leon, both of Gateway;
two daughters, Carol Lovoi of Fruita and Carla Moores of Whitewater; one sister, Joan Kruckenberg of Grand Junction; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Jean Moores

Jean Moores, 84, died at her home near Gateway, Friday June 10, 2016.
Jean was born to Wendell and Clara Larsen in her mother’s parent’s home in Parowan, Utah on October 31, 1931. Her identical twin sister, Joan, was born soon after. When they were six weeks old their father came from Gateway, CO where her parents had been living and took Jean, Joan, sister Shirley, brother Rodney and their mother back to Gateway. Jean grew up and went through school in Gateway. She graduated from Gateway High School in May of 1949.
On August 2, 1949, she married Vernon Charles Moores in
Grand Junction, CO. The first several years they moved often,
first living at McAtlin’s Sawmill on the La Sal Mountains. They
lived in Grand Junction, Paonia, Climax, Gateway off and on,
and in many mining camps where Vern mined or wagon drilled
for uranium. They lived on Atkinson Mesa and Long Park near
Uravan, La Sal Creek, Polar Mesa, Tenderfoot Mesa, Calamity
Mesa and Outlaw Mesa. Two boys and two girls were born to
Vernon and Jean. In 1958 they moved to a small ranch in the
Unaweep Canyon ten miles north of Gateway where Jean spent the rest of her life. For many years Jean raised chickens, calves, and a large garden. She helped feed cows, cooked for hunters and tourists and helped at the mines, including crimping the caps on the fuses for the blasting at the uranium mine on Outlaw in the late 1970’s and she helped later at the sawmill with the firewood. In 1982 Jean took the IRS test and was “Enrolled to Practice before the Internal Revenue Service”. Her main customer was the family business.
Jean enjoyed the fishing trips she and her husband took to the
reservoirs, the Pacific Coast, Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana, and
Mexico. She usually caught the biggest fish.
After Vernon’s death in 1989 Jean continued with their two
sons operating the ranches, mining and the sawmill operations
until she retired. Jean thought she was blessed to have seven
grandchildren that lived on the ranch and four more not far
away. She especially enjoyed taking the grandchildren with her
to feed cows or to the mountain cabin on Pinion Mesa. She
spent many hours enjoying her grandchildren and in her later
years she enjoyed her great-grandchildren. She took a few more trips with some of the family and friends to Alaska, California, Boston, Tennessee, and went on an Alaskan cruise with her daughters.
Jean served as a commissioner on the Mesa County Planning
Commission for seven years. Jean worked on many volunteer
projects with the Gateway Community club and served as
Secretary/Treasurer until her death. In the early 1990’s Jean
joined the Mesa County Historical Society and was Treasurer until her death. With encouragement and help from several old
timers of Gateway and with the help of James Earl Massey they compiled a history of the area. Then in 2000 Jean had the book published, “Gateway/Unaweep Canyon at Some Point in Time”.

Moores of Gateway; daughters, Carol Lovoi of Fruita and
Carla Moores of Whitewater; twin sister, Joan Kruckenberg of
Grand Junction; sisters-in-law, Shirley (Barge) Massey of Tucson, AZ; Arlene Puls and Zita Roseborough; 11 grandchildre, Richard (Dusty) Moores of Loma; Ray (Meg) Moores of Sheridan, WY; Sara (Matt) Gillilan and Michelle (Dan) Gillilan of Fruita; Mandy (Andrew) Massey in the Unaweep; Kristy (Cody) Dennis of Moorcroft, WY; Julie (Andy) Azcarraga of Collbran; Derek (Marlo) Lovoi of Mack; Heidi (Anthony) Carcella of Boulder; Jacob (Katy) Lovoi of Fort Collins, and Andy (Michelle) Moores of Denver; 33 great-grandchildren, Cody, Jenna, Karysa, Ethan, Tyler, Will, Luke, Vivienne, Eliza, Gracey, Seth, Hannah, Hunter, Tucker, Aiden, Amaya, Alex, Ruby Jean and Cora Joan, Eda, Trudy, Kayla, Alicia, Lindsey, Colby, Christian, Jacob, Faith, Hope, Ellie, Maggie, Archer, and Louise; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Those that went before her were her parents; husband, Vernon Moores; sister, Shirley Larsen; brother, Rodney Larsen; son-in-law, Gary Lovoi, and grandson, Toby Lovoi.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June
18, 2016, at Martin Mortuary with a visitation time from 12:00
p.m. until service time. Burial will be at Orchard Mesa Cemetery.
