Samuel Fenno Carter was born March 6, 1921, in Leadville to Joseph and Cora (Fenno) Carter.
For the first summers of his life, he and his family would take Tennessee Pass over Battle Mountain from Leadville to Edwards in a covered wagon in order to build the Carter Homestead. In 1926, at age 5, he crossed Battle Mountain for the final time, settling at the homestead with his family (now known as Carterville) and lived here until Tuesday, at the time of his death.
Sam led a wonderful life. On March 3, 1951, Sam married who he lovingly referred to as the last Squaw on Squaw Creek, his beloved wife, Betty Terry. On March 3, 2009 Sam and Betty celebrated their 58th anniversary of marriage.
Sam served our country in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II until he was honorably discharged on Oct. 14, 1945. Before then, he served on the USS Dixie and helped commission on the USS Providence.
Sammy was an avid game player and sportsman. He enjoyed playing cards and dice, at which he was suspect of cheating, but to this day we have yet to find proof. His family loved playing games with him and each game time holds cherished memories for all of them. Sam also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a highly skilled trapper. He loved to make people laugh; he would dance and sing just to see a smile on your face.
Sam was very active in the Eagle Senior Center until the last year of his life. He would spend time there playing games and sharing meals with friends.
Sam is survived by his wife, Betty of Carterville; his daughters, Sandra and her husband, Mike Houle, of Littleton; Diane and her husband, Gifford Justice, of Chula Vista, Calif.; Leora and her husband, Wayne Deschamps, of Wray; son-in-law Rev. Donald D. Lagge of Golden; brother Joseph and his wife, Mary Carter; and a sister, Alma; as well as a sister-in-law, Wanda Carter.
Grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Candee Hewitt and her husband, Dave, and their daughter, Shylee; Scott Lagge and his wife, Sheri, and their children Brandon, Jessica and Carter; Joshua Lagge and his wife, Heather Joy; Talis Scullion and her husband, Chad; Timmy Deschamps; Todd Deschamps and his wife, Pam, and their children Brandy, Celina, Morgan and Blake; Tony Deschamps and his wife, Robin, and their son, Logan; Traci Johnson and her husband, Steve; and adopted grandchildren Scott, Corey, Todd and Troy Anderson and their families. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and brothers- and sisters-in-laws.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Janice K.; sisters Theo and Buena; brothers Harry, Bobby and Russell; niece Linda Hayes; and nephew Davy Carter.
Sammy will be greatly missed by his friends and family. We love you, Sam. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle, with burial to follow at Sunset View Cemetery.
