Jody Caruthers of Kalispell, Mont., an Eagle native and former county assessor, died April 24. She was 64.
Caruthers was born March 1, 1943, in Eagle to Joseph and Ethel (Sawnn) Chambers. Her parents moved the family to Phoenix for a few years when she was a child and then returned to Eagle.
Caruthers attended school in Eagle and graduated from Eagle High School.
She married William “Bill” Caruthers on June 16, 1963. They spent the first few years of their married life in Red Cliff, where their first daughter was born. They then moved to Eagle and had their second daughter.
After a short time in Eagle they moved to Aurora where they lived until 1973. In 1973 they returned to Eagle. They lived in Eagle until 1994 when Bill was transferred to La Junta by his employer, CenturyTel.
Shortly after Bill’s death in 1996, Jody returned to Eagle. She retired to Kalispell in December, 2005.
She had been employed by the Eagle Valley Enterprise and the Eagle County Assessor’s office. She was elected Eagle County assessor twice. Prior to retiring, she worked for The Title Company of the Rockies in Avon.
Before retiring to northwest Montana she was active in the Rebekah Lodges of Gypsum and Leadville; the Eagle Dandylions and Lions Clubs, and the Eagle United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Dickens Carolers.
After moving to Kalispell she continued to remain active in Rebekahs and was a member of the Kalispell Lions Club. She attended Epworth United Methodist Church in Kalispell and was a member of the Valley Voices Choir.
Her passions in life were her family, her cats, quilting, music, photography and reading, family members said.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister, Maxine Hudspeth.
She is survived by her daughters, Suzette Schlund and husband Chuck of Spokane, Wash., and Celeste Hauser and husband Bert of Kalispell, Mont.; and five grandchildren, Amy Schlund, Randal Schlund, Anthony Hauser, Andrew Hauser and Amanda Hauser.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Eagle United Methodist Church with a reception following. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lakeview Cemetery in Canon City.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that gifts be made to the Northwest Health Care Foundation, 301 Sunnyview Lane, Kalispell, Mont. 59901 with the memo of Diabetes Education/Lions Strides Walk. Caruthers was actively involved in the Kalispell Lion’s Club Strides Walk and was fund-raising at the time of her death.
