Former District Judge Charles Richard Casey died July 11 of heart failure in San Diego, where he was on vacation. He was a judge for the Fifth Judicial District, which includes Eagle County, from 1971 to 1975.

Judge Casey was born February 11, 1914. He attended public schools in Denver and earned his law degree from the University of Denver College of Law. After his graduation, he returned to Leadville, where his father, George Casey, was in the insurance business. He joined the US Army in 1942 as a lieutenant leaving the Army in 1945. From 1945 to 1971 he held the positions of deputy district attorney, Fifth Judicial District Attorney, probation officer and county attorney for Lake County. In 1971, he was appointed Fifth Judicial District Judge a position he held in 1975 when he retired and moved to Denver. From his retirement until this July, Judge Casey worked in the state's retired judge program. he had planned to travel extensively after retiring from that program but he died nine days later. Judge Casey is survived by his wife, Joan Casey of Denver; one son, Robert Casey of Leadville; and one daughter, Tom Ann Casey. Private services were conducted July 18 in Denver. Burial was in Fort Logan National Cemetery.
