Frank Peter D’Alessio, 74 years young, of Vail, died Wednesday. A celebration of his life and memorial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the Vail Interfaith Chapel. Parking is available in the Vail Parking Structure on South Frontage Road, east of the main roundabout.

Frank was born May 21, 1935, in Newark, N.J., to Frank and Vincenzina D’Alessio, and grew up in Newark. He married Sharon M. Boccanfuso on Feb. 18, 1984.

Before his success as an entrepreneur and inventor, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a full-time resident in Vail for the last 20 years. He volunteered as a crime analyst and volunteer coordinator for the Vail Police Department and became the founder and the director of the Citizen’s Police Academy.

He is credited with bringing emergency life saving equipment to Vail, namely automated external defibrillators, and also overseeing all training. He invented the Americana ski bindings in the 1970s, the first plate ski bindings. The first tandem triple flip ever performed was on Americana ski bindings.

He founded the first pay cable station Network in the New Jersey-New York-Connecticut tri-state area. His passions in life were skiing, motorcycling, a nice glass of red wine, traveling in Italy and loving his family and friends.

Frank always said “It is not what you’ve done, it is what you are doing.” He will be forever in our hearts and minds guiding us for the remainder of our journeys.

Frank is survived by his wife, Sharon; sons Richard (Lorraine) and Peter; daughter Jane; granddaughters Samantha and Briar; sister Mildred (Connie); and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank’s honor to the Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group. Condolences may be sent to the family at P.O. Box 3819, Vail, CO 81658.
