Donald F. Starr, 78, Grand Junction, died June 26, 2016, at HopeWest and Hospice Care Center.Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. Services will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Lu-theran Church of the Messiah. Survivors include his wife, Sharon Conklin-Starr; two daugh-ters, Debbie Mozingo of Englewood and Connie Starr-Stambaugh of Uniontown, Pennsylvania; one brother, Ralph Starr of Martin, Tennessee; one sister, Pauline Foral of Rifle; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Donald Floyd Starr passed away Sunday, June 26, 2016, at HopeWest Hospice Care Center surrounded by his loving family.
Born November 8, 1937, at home near Stilwell, Oklahoma. The family moved to Minturn, CO when he was age eight. He worked at Clark’s Grocery Store in Minturn and at New Jersey Zinc Mine in Gilman during his
school years, graduating from Minturn High School in 1956. He earned his associates degree from Mesa State College in 1958, and then returned to Minturn for five years and worked at the Climax Plant and also worked construction on some of the first Vail homes.
He married Shirley Peters in 1960 and they had two daughters, Debbie and Connie.
Don and Shirley loved the out-of-doors and camping, fishing,
gardening, and wood cutting were a big part of family life.
Shirley preceded Don in death in 2007.
He expanded his education in 1965 by graduating from
Western State College in Gunnison and received his Master’s
Degree from Colorado State College in Greeley in 1974.
Don worked for Mesa County Social Services (1965-67) and
the Colorado Division of Vocational Rehab Office for 30 years,
retiring in 1997. He started his service with the Vocational
Rehab Office in Glenwood Springs. During his time there he
was on the Board of Directors for the Mountain Valley Service
Center and helped establish the greenhouse operation for the
Center. Don and Shirley moved to Grand Junction where Don
assisted in the implementation of the American Disabilities Act
in Mesa County.
Don was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, he skied into
his 70’s and he loved snow shoeing under the full moon on the
Grand Mesa.
After marrying in 2013, Don and his wife, Sharon, enjoyed
traveling around the U.S. and Canada and visited friends and
family.
Don is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughters, Debbie
Mozingo and Connie Stambaugh; step-children, Mitch Davis,
Kyle Davis, and Karin Reddick-Smith; grandchildren, Tosha
Mozingo, Tyler Mozingo, Kasadyne, James, Jason and Dakota
Stambaugh; great-grandchildren, Ayden, Aleyna, Cage and
Colton; 11 step-grandchildren, and seven step-greatgrandchildren; his brother, Ralph (Jan); sister, Pauline, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by siblings, Eva, Eileen, Thelma Rose, Norma Jean, Billie Ann,
Frankie and Bob, and his parents, Paul and Opal Starr.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, from 5 - 7:00 p.m., at
Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. Services will take place at 11:00
a.m. Thursday at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah. The
family would like to thank HopeWest Hospice Care Center for
their compassionate care.
