Dawkins was born at Fort Bragg, N.C., and later joined the U.S. Army’s Special Forces. He graduated from Hampden Sydney College and earned an MBA from Emory University.

Dawkins worked in finance, with companies including Smith Barney, Gulfstream and Brunswick Corporation.

Dawkins and his family first visited Vail in 1973. During college, he spent a year working as a lift operator on Chair 7 in Game Creek Bowl and on the construction of Golden Peak Lift the following summer. He also spent a year building homes in Africa.

Dawkins was an experienced skydiver with over 1,300 freefall parachute jumps and also was a pilot, family and friends said.

Dawkins volunteered regulary at his children’s schools and led a Cub Scout pack.

Dawkins is survived by his wife, Winkie Dawkins, and his three children, Miller, Reilly and Caroline. He is also survived by his parents, Brigadier Gen. (Ret.) and Mrs. Peter M. Dawkins, and his sister, Noël Dawkins Mihalow.
