JOHN RONALD HELMS 1922-2009.
John Ronald HELMS, 87, of Eagle died July 19 of natural causes at the Veteran's Nursing Home in Rifle.
John was born July 7, 1922, in Elkton, Colo. to Harold and Ruby Snowden HELMS. He attended school in Victor and Cripple Creek.
John married Muriel Ann WINTER on June 10, 1949 in Eagle. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.
John was a World War II veteran and he was deployed to Japan. He was a member of the American Legion Post 150.
John worked for New Jersey Zinc for 35 years and was a supervisor for most of that time. He retired in 1985.
He loved the great outdoors and enjoyed camping with his family, fishing, hunting and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Muriel HELMS of Eagle. He is also survived by his children Tom and Deanne HELMS of Eagle, Rod HELMS of Eagle, Joan HELMS of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Ron and Vicky HELMS of Centerfield, Utah.
Survivors also include grandchildren and great-grandchildren Amy and Mark HUTTON and her son Jaden TAYLOR of Burlington; Zach HELMS of Gypsum; Amber VAIL of Denver; Matthew and Meka ULLRICK and their son Nathan ULLRICK of Glenwood Springs; Herman HOGUE, Sabrina HOGUE, Chance HELMS and Chelsi HELMS of Centerfield, Utah.
His surviving sisters are Marylee and Don HENNIGAR of Lindon, Mich.; and Mildred SODERSTROM of Casa Grande, Ariz.
Other surviving family members include Brenda and Joe ROBIDOUX of Wright, Wyo. and their children Jerilynn and Walt of Gillette, Wyo.; James ROBIDOUX and his three children John, Michael and Marianna of South Dakota; Janice STRAUSS of Westminster and her children Steven STRAUSS, Chris STRAUSS and daughter Jessica and granddaughter Faith; and Raymond STRAUSS and son Ryann.
John was preceeded in death by his parents, Harold and Ruby HELMS and brothers Harold HELMS and Billie HELMS.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Gypsum. A burial service will follow at the Sunset View Cemetery in Eagle. A dinner at the First Baptist Church in Gypsum will follow graveside services.
