Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 3 D Obituary - October 2, 2016

Nancy Carol Distefano
December 13, 1934 - September 25, 2016
Our beautiful wife, mother and grandmother, Nancy Carol Distefano, passed away on September 25, 2016, at HopeWest Hospice Care Center, she was 81.
She was born December 13, 1934, to Morrie Sixbey and Mary Altenbern in Ontario, Oregon. Her family traveled throughout the United States, due to her father’s construction work, from Oregon to Pennsylvania, where she had to walk miles to school in the snow and almost died from frost bite. From Pennsylvania her family moved to Leadville then Debeque and then settled in Palisade when she was a young girl.
Nancy and her mother worked to take care of their family. She
worked in the packing sheds at a very young age making boxes and packing fruit. She helped her mother iron clothes for others.
She attended Palisade High School.
Nancy met her husband, George Distefano, in Palisade where
they were married on September 14, 1950. She had two
daughters, Diana and Carol.
Nancy spent her married life as a housewife and a wonderful
Mother. Her daughters were blessed to have her at home as they grew up. She loved her family dearly and held them together with her positive outlook on life and her endless strength. She was an awesome cook and hostess who always opened her home to anyone in need.
Nancy spent her summers at the softball park she loved to keep score for George’s baseball and softball teams. During that time, Nancy was honored in Denver through the Colorado Hall of Honor for Softball through the ASA softball association. She also helped her husband in their family fruit orchard business, having the special gift of knowing just when that cherry or peach would be ready for picking and to eat.
She was a member of the American Legion Post #50 Auxiliary
since 1956, she was District President for one year and held all the different positions at one point.
Nancy always spent and had time for her family throughout
her life, especially with her husband taking their trips to
Blackhawk and breakfast every morning at Starvin Arvin’s with
their special friends. She made sure that she had a special bond with each one of us. She was our best friend all the time. She showed us how to be strong and to not let setbacks get us down.
She always said, “We may not have much, but we have each
other.” There was not a time that she was not there. She made sure that we always had our birthday cards and made sure that we knew how loved and special we were to her.
Her favorite holiday was Christmas. When we were younger
we would go as a family to cut down our Christmas trees. She
always made sure that there was warm hot chocolate and
donuts. When the big day would come there was always a big
meal on the table, enough sweets, and a present for everyone.
We will always love you and hold you close to our hearts. You
will be greatly missed. Nancy is survived by her husband of 66
years, George Distefano; daughters, Diana Hardin (Pat) and
Carol Distefano; grandchildren, Tekoa Shalom, Jessica Selan,
Krystinna Hardin (Jason), Trevor Hardin, Derrick Selan
(Mandy), and Hallie Hardin; great-grandchildren, Harmony,
Hope, and Riley Hardin, Rhyan Mason and Autumn Pope.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Hannah
Hardin; mother, Mary and Edward Altenbern; father, Morrie and Dorthea Sixbey, and her brothers, Homer and Rodney Sixbey.
Services will be held Monday, October 3, 2016, at 11:00 a.m.,
at the Clifton Christian Church of Clifton, Colorado. Graveside
services and Interment will follow at the Palisade Municipal
Cemetery of Palisade, Colroado.
