Irene Lorraine Hayter
Williams of Grand Junction,
CO passed away peacefully
Tuesday, September 8, 2016,
at Bee Hive Homes in Grand
Junction, CO.
Irene was born on August
16, 1917, to Allen Amos and
Eva Almyra Brown Hayter on
the Hayter family farm in
Grant Twp., Cass Co., IA. She
was the second of three
daughters. She attended
country school through sixth
grade. Irene and her sister,
Aline, used to ride their horse,
Dick, to school and then let
him return home to the farm.
One day Irene had the bright
Idea to tie Dick up so she
could ride him home after
school. About an hour after
school began her father, Allen, stormed up to the school to pick
up the horse and Irene was in big trouble. Irene attended the last
few years of grammar school in Anita, living in town with her
aunt and uncle during the week because she could not attend
Anita Elementary legally any other way. She also attended
Anita High School and graduated at age 16 in 1934. Irene
attended and graduated from Beauty College in Ames, IA after
she and Larry were married.
Irene married Lawrence Allan Williams of Atlantic, Iowa on
July 7, 1937, in Maryville, MO. They celebrated 69 years of
marriage prior to Larry’s passing in 2006.
Irene and Larry lived at the Hayter family farm and in Ames,
IA until Larry left college. Terry was born on the farm in the
same room in which Irene was born 21 years before. Irene
practiced cosmetology in Atlantic, IA and they lived above the
beauty shop. In 1940 the family moved to Omaha, NB, the
birthplace of Judy. Larry was employed with the federal
government so was not drafted until 1944. Irene, Terry and Judy
moved to CA to be closer to Larry. They lived in Long Beach,
Carmel-by-the-Sea and San Francisco until Larry was separated
from the Navy in 1946. The family moved to Cheyenne, WY
where Allan was born. In 1951 the family was transferred to
Denver, CO and the birth of Cindy was accomplished. The
family moved to Helena, MT in 1955 and then back to Denver
in 1960. Larry’s early retirement in 1972, was followed by a
move to Grand Junction, CO. Later Irene and Larry lived in
Apache Junction, AZ, Mesa, AZ, Cedaredge, CO, Palisade, CO
and finally settled back in Grand Junction in 1981. Irene was
caregiver to Larry for 54 years until his death from
complications of Multiple Sclerosis.
Irene played bridge for 75 years and especially enjoyed
playing duplicate bridge. She sewed until she was in her 90’s
making clothing for herself, Larry, her children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren. She loved bargain shopping for
clothing for her grandchildren. Irene was also a talented artist
and needlewoman. Her joy was caring for her family. She and
Larry spent many years camping and visiting family in their tent
camper and motor home.
Irene is survived by her sons, Terry (Anne) Williams of La
Verkin, UT and Allan (Phyllis) Williams of Longmont, CO;
daughters, Judy (Don) Schneider of Grand Junction and Cindy
(Larry) Ribble of Kansas City, MO: grandchildren, Andy
