He was born on May 23,
1931, in San Luis, CO to
Elefar and Corina (Rael)
Barela. He married Eva
(Espinoza) in Montrose, CO
and together they shared 64
years of marriage before her passing. Leo spent his childhood in
Montrose, CO. His work ethic was amazing as indicated by his
37 working years in Uravan, CO for Umetco before retiring to
Grand Junction with his wife. His children were raised in
Uravan; he loved Uravan and the people there.
Leo served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He loved
his family more than anything and enjoyed family gatherings,
family vacations/reunions. He enjoyed hunting, fishing,
camping, mechanic work on vehicles/motorcycles. He was a
member of the Jubilee Family Church, 483 30 Rd., in Grand
Junction.
He was an amazing husband and father, and loving grandfather
to Mark Phillips, Brian Phillips,Wendy Boone, Heidi Williams,
Casey Blood, Andy Blood, Sara Barela and Josh Barela. He also
adored his 12 great-grandchildren. We will all miss this very
gentle man, who had a wonderful sense of humor, and a willing
spirit to help all in need. He was a wonderful example of love in
marriage, family values, and his faith in God.
He is survived by his children, Betty (Steve) Smith of Penrose;
Cathy (Dean) Catt of Loma; Caren (Howard) Stephens of Grand
Junction, and Robbie (Jennifer) Barela of Grand Junction. Leo’s
father passed away when Leo was just a child. His mother
remarried Adonis Miera and to that union Leo gained brothers,

of Rock Springs, WY, and sisters, Sally Vigil of Albuquerque,
NM; Pearl (Ralph) Casias of Belen, NM; Lorraine Maestos of
San Bernardino, CA; Priscilla (David) Hernandez of Olathe and
