Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 5 B Obituary - September 29, 2016
Harold M. Voorhees, “Bee,” was born March 25, 1926, to Esther
(Cohn) and Theodore Voorhees at the Voorhees Mortuary,
which is now the Palisade Funeral Home. That day, the apricot
crop suffered a complete loss due to freeze. He grew up and attended
schools in Palisade.
He joined the US Navy in 1944, and served aboard the USS
Aaron Ward in the Pacific Theatre. While aboard the Aaron
Ward, off the coast of Okinawa, the ship was attacked by nine
kamikaze aircraft, and nearly sunk. The book, Brave Ship,
Brave Men, was written about this ship and the men who served
on it.
After his tour of duty ended, he returned to Palisade and started
a family. He married Nola Jean Campbell on June 15, 1949,
and worked many jobs: truck driving hauling ore, raising fruit,
farming, and as a plant operator for Public Service (now Xcel
Energy), from which he retired in 1990 after 35 years of service.
After his retirement, he owned and operated Voorhees’ Solar-
Dried Fruit.
Together, Harold and Nola raised five children, one daughter,
and four sons, Susan of Cedaredge, Colorado; James (deceased)
and Pamela Voorhees of Palisade; Dave and Dianna Voorhees
of Palisade; Miles Voorhees of Palisade, and Ben (deceased)
and Shirley Voorhees of Palisade. He is survived by 14 grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother; two sisters;
two sons, and one infant grandson.
Donations may be made in his name and memory to HopeWest
Hospice of Grand Junction or Cowboy at the Cross Ministries,
PO Box 754, Delta, CO, 81416-0754.
