Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 7 B Obituary - November 23, 2016

An amazing wife, mother,
sister, aunt, niece,
grandmother, greatgrandmother
and friend to all,
has gone home.
Rita was born in Phoenix,
Arizona to Alvah and Vieva
Shaw, the middle child in a
family of five. She shared a
home in Fruita, Colorado with
her husband of 22 years,
Thomas O’Dell.
She was the ray of sunshine in her mother’s eyes, as her mom
always told her she lit up any room she entered. She had a
caring and loving spirit, and would put others needs before her
own. Anyone who knew Rita knew this to be true. She loved to
visit and talk with her family. She would often speak of her sons
and how proud she was of them. Their only hope is that she
knew how proud they were of her. She taught them that when
life hands you lemons you take care of your family.
Rita received a MS Champion Award in 2009, for providing
leadership and support through arts and crafts for others living
with MS. She used an art form called stippling to ink many of
the Grand Valley’s treasures; she would sell prints of her
artwork to help raise funds and interest for the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society.
Rita had a strong faith in the Lord, the daughter of an ordained
minister of the Church of Christ. She shared her faith with
Christ to anyone who would listen.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Alvah James Shaw
and Vieva Lorraine Shaw; sister, Joye Karlin, and brother-inlaw,
Mike Malone.
Rita is survived by her loving husband, Thomas O’Dell; sons,
John Grant (Shauna), and Jamison Grant (Erin); daughters,
Sheila Peters (Lonnie), Tamara O’Dell, Lynnette O’Dell and
Deanna O’Dell; brothers, Randall Shaw (Debbie), and Kenneth
Shaw; sister, Verda Malone; 22 grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren,
cousins, nephews and nieces that she loved
dearly.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the
Multiple Sclerosis Society, 521 Rood, Suite B, Grand Junction,
CO 81501.
There will be a Memorial Services at the Church of Christ,
3233 B ½ Road in Orchard Mesa, on Saturday, November 26th
at 1:13 p.m. Please join us and share your memories of Rita with
her family and friends.
