November 22, 1916 - October 18, 2016
Cedaredge resident, Charlie Roscoe Hawkins, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at his residence. He was 99 years of age.
Charlie was born at home, the seventh of 13 children, to J.W. and Cora Adams Hawkins of Eckert. He attended school at Tongue Creek. He married Dale M. Gresham
on January 16, 1939 in Hotchkiss CO; she passed away January 6, 1982. They had three children, Charles, Judith and Mary.
He was married to Irene for ten years before her death. In
1995, Charlie and Margaret McMurray were married in Las
Vegas, NM. She passed away January 8, 2008.
Charlie was a fruit grower in the Surface Creek area. He joined
IOOF at the age of 19 and was an active member throughout his life. He had a love for gardening, dancing, reading, current
affairs, playing cards and games (which he won his fair share),
and his family. He served as an Army lineman in France and
Germany during WWII.
He is survived by daughters and their husbands, Judith A. and
Ronald MacKendrick of Cedaredge, CO; Mary K. and Thomas
Kalenian of Grand Junction, CO; step-daughters and husbands,
Macky Spurlock of Decatur, IL; Kathy and Fred Allen of Las
Vegas, NM; Rita and Dennis Hightower of Verona, MO; Aleta
and Russell Mallette of Las Vegas, NM; brother, John Hawkins;
sister, Esther Barrett of Cedaredge, CO; ten grandchildren and
12 great-grandchildren. Charlie was preceded in death by his
parents; wives; brothers, Bruce, Floyd, Roy and Kenneth;
sisters, Dora Ashurst, Helen Buff, May Cotton, Hazel Frey,
Margaret McNutt, and Ruth Rowell; grandson, Christopher
Kalenian, and great-grandson, Dominic Tochtrop.
Memorial contributions, in Charlie’s honor, may be made to
HopeWest, 195 Stafford Lane, Delta, CO 81416.
A graveside service will be held Saturday October 29, 2016,
11:00 a.m. at the Cedaredge Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor
Funeral Service and Crematory.
