Man found dead near McCoy

Suicide notes found in truck

A decomposed body discovered by hunters on Conger Mesa near Copper Spur Road Thursday has tentatively been identified as that of a Fort Collins man who apparently committed suicide, according to Routt County Coroner Dale Hammock.

Floyd M. Fredrickson, 40, was reported missing from Fort Collins in June.

Although Hammock and Routt County Sheriff's investigators are fairly certain the body is that of Fredrickson, Hammock said the body will be examined by a forensic anthropologist this week.

"it's a tentative ID. This week we're calling in a forensic anthropologist to investigate. We're comfortable with the ID, but it's not fronclad until forensics is involved," said Hammock Monday.

Hammock said the case was initially treated as a homicide. But early the next morning, discoveries at the scene led investigators to believe otherwise.

Fredrickson's 1988 GMC pickup was discovered early the next morning about 20 yards away from the body, according to Hammock. Inside the pick-up, investigators discovered a suitcase which contained suicide letters to members of Fredrickson's family.

Hunters discovered Fredrickson's body early Thursday evening and went to a nearby residence to phone Eagle County authorities.

Members of the Eagle County Sheriff's Department responded but soon discovered that the area where the body was found was actually in Routt County.

"They did a good job. It's one of those things about this type of country. Sometimes the only access point is located in one county, but the scene is located in another."

The body, estimated Hammock, was 1/2 to 1/4 mile away from the Eagle County line.
