Rosella Gorsett
July 21, 1919 - January 4, 2017
Rosella was born in Hospers, Iowa, to Gerrit and Phoebe (Veenstra) Boone; she had six siblings. Originally living on a farm, they moved to town in the midst of the Depression where Gerrit worked for the WPA. Rose’s job as a child was to follow trains as they came through town and pick up any coal that fell off to heat their home. She also did laundry, making fifty cents a day.
Rose met Kenneth Gorsett from South Dakota. They married
July 26, 1941. Kenneth was inducted into the army in January
1942. Rose followed him around the country during the early
war years. They enjoyed the army life, making lifelong friends.
Finally having enough of living in a shack in the Georgia red
clay dirt, she returned to her family in Iowa when Kenneth
shipped out for Europe.
When Kenneth returned they started a family in northwest
Iowa. Randall, Rodney, and Dennis (Linda) where born there.
The family moved to Colorado in 1957, having loved the area
when Kenneth was stationed at Camp Carson. Rose raised the
kids and worked as a cook (baker) in the Denver Schools, while
Kenneth worked as a mechanic.
They retired to Grand Junction in 1977, enjoying golf,
bowling, fishing and retired life. Rose continued to live in Grand
Junction, enjoying bingo, after Kenneth’s passing in 1988. For
the last year and a half, Rose lived at the Commons and Mantey Heights. The family would like to express our deepest
appreciation to the staff of both.
Rose is survived by her sister, Nelvina; her sons; four
grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 10, at
Callahan-Edfast with services to follow at 1:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions to the Salvation Army, 1235 N. Fourth
St., Grand Junction 81501, or to the First Presbyterian Church,
3940 27 1/2 Road, Grand Junction 81506.
