Mary Jean Bevan, a longtime
resident of Mesa, Colorado,
passed away peacefully in her
home on January 29, 2017.
She was 84.
Mary Jean was born on
September 15, 1931, in Mesa,
Colorado at the family home
of Alfred and Leola
Rasmussen. She grew up in
Mesa along with her two
sisters and attended Mesa High School. She worked as a
telephone operator for the local phone company. She married
George Bevan of Mesa on September 10, 1950. They were
happily married for 66 years.
Mary Jean was an active woman who enjoyed several
activities. She had a love of the outdoors, traveling, growing
flowers in her yard, and spending time with family. She was an
early member of the Plateau Valley EMTs and was appointed to
a state board which advised rural first response. She enjoyed
riding horseback on the ranch and rode side-saddle in the local
riding group for many years. Mary Jean spent many summer
days digging worms to supply her side-of-the-road worm stand
along Hwy. 65 in Mesa. She operated that stand and sold worms
to fisherman traveling to the Grand Mesa for nearly 50 years.
She was approached many times and asked if she was the
“worm lady” from Mesa.
Mary Jean was preceded in death by her two sisters, Cookie
Wallace, and Margaret Ann Williams. She is survived by her
husband, George Bevan; children, Dennis (Rita) Bevan of
Mesa; Tim (Kym) Bevan of Grand Junction; Tori (Randy) Kittel
of Grand Junction, and Rudy (Pam) Bevan of Loma. She is
survived by nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren,
along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
She was deeply loved by all and will be truly missed.
A private graveside memorial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Plateau Valley
Fire Protection District at P. O. Box 210 Mesa, CO 81643.
