Betty Mae Steele
August 13, 1936 - August 2, 2017
Betty Steele passed away on August 2, 2017, in Aurora, CO, at the age of 80 following a short illness. Betty was born and raised in Lebanon, Indiana. At the age of 18 in 1955, she married Gordon Steele and moved to Colorado. Betty and Gordon raised their children in Oak Creek, Colorado. Betty was the choir director for the Methodist Church and she also gave private music lessons for many years. She loved to sing and play piano, and later learned to play and enjoy the guitar. Betty was a volunteer EMT in Oak Creek in the 1970’s. She and Gordy cared for 16 foster children in their home, over the course of five years. In later life, she worked as an aid in Special Education classrooms, which she enjoyed very much. After Betty and Gordon left Oak Creek in 1979, they lived in Craig, CO; Grand Junction, CO; Anaconda, MT, and Yuma AZ. She was preceded in death by husband, Gordon Steele; son, Morgan Wells Steele; infant son, Jeffry Brian Steele; parents, Emil and Winifred Perkins; dear cousin, Ruth Ann Perkins, and many precious aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws. She is survived by her children, Marcia (Hank) Slosson of Anaconda, MT and their family; Angie (Steve) Butterworth of Aurora, CO, and Toby Steele of Fort Lupton, CO. Survivors also include granddaughter, Leah Landes of Durango, CO; nephews, Russ (Renee) Steele and their family; Evan (Marga) Steele of Australia and their family; Chad (Sharon) Steele and their family, and niece, Spring (Monte) Phillips. She is also survived by precious cousins and in-laws too numerous to mention. Ashes will be interred at a family ceremony this fall, with a celebration of life to be held in the summer of 2018. As Betty wrote for Gordy’s memorial celebration, "Don’t be sad". She had a good life. She squeezed all the living she could into it. Memorial donations may be made to Intermountain Children’s Home in Helena, MT.
