William "Bill" Cuny, of Edwards, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on the morning of Aug. 7 while in Mexico with his family. He was 74. He leaves behind his wife of many years, Anne, son Derek (Marisa), his grandson Luke and a new granddaughter due to arrive in September.
Bill was the brother of Rick Cuny, who has lived in the Vail Valley since 1972, so Bill and his family have been visiting here frequently since then during both winters and summers.
For six years, from 1976 to 1982, he was stationed at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, enabling him and his family to visit the valley often.
Bill is also survived by his sister, Sharon Johnston, of Tampa, Florida, and nephews Casey Cuny, Ricky Cuny and niece Jessica Van Dusen, their families and several great-nephews and a great-niece.
He served in the Air Force for 21 years both in the United States and overseas, 17 years of which were as an air traffic controller. He then transitioned to the Federal Aviation Administration, doing the same job in Tampa, Florida, until he retired in 2005.
In 2011, after his wife retired, they purchased a second home in Eagle-Vail and began living here for half of the year — skiing in the winter and enjoying the summers hiking and traveling in between. They recently decided to live here full time, sold their home in Florida and purchased and moved into a home in Singletree this spring.
Bill was a very generous and giving person and would help anyone without being asked. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and his faithful companion, his dog Reilly. A memorial and celebration of life will be held on Oct. 1.
