Dell Riggs Foutz, 84, Grand Junction, died Feb. 13, 2017, at St.
Mary’s Hospital.
Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at Martin Mortuary.
Visitation will also take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the LDS Stake
Center, 2542 G Road. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.
He was a professor of geology.
Survivors include his wife, Arvilla; one son, Dr. Paul Foutz of
Grand Junction; four daughters, Vicki Whiting, and Connie Monroe,
both of Grand Junction, Janice Foutz of Provo, Utah, and
Tracy Robinson of Jacksonville, Florida; one brother, Kent L.
Foutz of Longmont; two sisters, LaRue Sparrow of Roy, Utah, and
LaRene Barclay of South Ogden, Utah; 18 grandchildren; and 17
great-grandchildren.

Dr. Dell R. Foutz, retired
Professor of Geology, passed
away Monday, February 13,
2017, at St. Mary’s Hospital in
Grand Junction ,CO.
Dell Riggs Foutz was born
November 15, 1934, in
Ogden, UT, the third of five
children born to Leslie and
Veva Riggs Foutz. Dell
graduated from Ogden High
in 1950, and Weber Jr. College in 1952. Dell received both BS
and MS Degrees from Brigham Young University, Provo, UT,
and graduated with a PhD in Geology at Washington State
University in 1966.
Dell married Sherry Bradfield, of Fortuna, CA, on December
22, 1953, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. In 1956, Dell was
called into the Air Force and began pilot training. He spent 1958-
59 in Korea. After his service in the Air Force, Dell returned to
BYU and was an Army Reserves pilot.
Dell earned his Doctorate at WSU in Pullman, WA, then
moved to Corpus Christi, TX, in 1965 to begin work as a
geologist with Humble Oil Co. In Kingsville, TX, Dell served as
Bishop in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In 1972, Dell began teaching just as MCC was transitioning to
Mesa State College. His official retirement was in 1995. He
authored two books: "Illustrated Geology of Colorado" and
"Where’s the Gold on the Colorado River? (And How to Get It
Out?)".
In 2002 Dell and Sherry, served an 18 month CES mission for
the church in Greensboro, NC. In 2005-06, they served two
summers at the Mormon Historic Handcart Site at Martin’s
Cove, WY.
In 2010 Dell married Arvilla Jones Jenson of Las Vegas, NV.
Dell authored a third book, "Elusive Treasures", an
autobiographical work, mixing humorous twists of fiction into
his real-life adventures and personal experiences.
Dell is survived by his wife, Arvilla J. Foutz; son, Dr. Paul
Foutz, OD; daughters, Vicki Whiting, and Connie Monroe, both
of Grand Junction; Janice Foutz of Provo, Utah, and Tracy
Robinson of Jacksonville, Florida; brother, Kent L. Foutz of
Longmont; sisters, Larue Sparrow of Roy, Utah, and Larene
Barclay of S. Ogden, Utah; 18 grandchildren; and 17 greatgrandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Friday at Martin
Mortuary. Visitation will also take place 10 - 10:40 a.m.
Saturday at the LDS Stake Center, 2542 G Road. Services will
follow at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services, with military honors,
will be held February 22, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at the Grand
Junction Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 2830 Riverside
Parkway.
