Steamboat Pilot - September 19, 2017

Walter Lewis Robinson passed away Aug. 31, 2017. He was born Aug. 22, 1927 in Steamboat Springs. The doctor who delivered him was Dr. F. E. Willett. His parents Henry Ezra and Clara Hays Robinson preceded him in death as did his brothers, Leo and Marvin Robinson and three sisters, Anna Van Cleve, Bernice Brobeck and Lola Mae Bristol. In 1995, Walter and Lorraine were married. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, his four children by a previous marriage, Mark Robinson, Lynn Hallstrom, Todd Robinson and Sheri Morrison, and three grandchildren.

Walt loved living on the Robinson family ranch on the Elk River. He always had many chores to do especially during hay season. He loved to fish from the Elk River and also did some trapping.

When school started in the fall he rode his horse Cutie to the Fly Gulch Country School. On very cold days his mother would spend extra time getting him all bundled up, and told him, "Do not run Cutie, but make her walk fast.” Walt finished grade school at Fly Gulch and enrolled in Steamboat Springs High School. The family purchased a house in Steamboat Springs so he could go to high school without having to drive back and forth from the ranch. Walt loved sports and participated in all of them and was very active in all school functions. He was vice president of his senior class of 30 students.

Walt graduated from high school in May 1945. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed on Guam.

After his discharge from the Navy, Walt enrolled at Colorado State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

He accepted a position as a project manager for Hughes Aircraft Co. and was very active in their missile program. Walt loved working for Hughes and was very passionate and sincere about his career there. He retired in June 1988.

Walt was always busy tinkering with wood, such as whittling and making lamps for everyone and building birdhouses for his fence line. He loved rocks, making jewelry and other lapidary work. Walt was forever on his 4-wheeler and tractor doing chores around the property and fixing things up. Photography was another hobby. Between serving in the Navy and entering college, he worked in a portrait studio in Steamboat Springs to help pay the bills. He continued to document his life in pictures.

Walt also loved being with family. His favorite times were at Robinson Family Reunions, camping, fishing and backpacking. His last hurrah was a pack trip into the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana with his kids and grandkids. A 22 mile horseback ride followed by a 10 day float trip down the South Fork. He was 80 years old and a real trooper.

Mexico was Walt’s favorite destination and he enjoyed the many years he and Lorraine wintered there.

We will miss his love of adventure and attitude of living life to its fullest. We will treasure the time and memories he has left us. He will be missed. Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 23 at 11:00 a.m. at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery around the flagpole. Condolences can be made at yampavalleyfh.com/obituary/walterrobinson.
