November 22, 1926 - February 17, 2017
Lawrence Charles Miller, 90, was born on November 22, 1926, in Bellingham, WA, to Lawrence Frederic and Charlotte Miller. He went to be with the Lord on February 17, 2017, after a three-year courageous battle with mantle cell Lymphoma cancer.
Larry graduated from Rogers High School in Spokane, WA, in 1944 and enlisted in the Navy at age 17.
He went to boot camp in Florida and three service schools to attain the rank of AOM 3/c. Following his discharged from the Navy in 1946, he worked for the Railway Mail Service for one year, then entered college to earn a degree in Civil Engineering from Washington State University in 1951.
Larry enjoyed a 50-year engineering career working for
Weyerhaeuser Timber Company, Whitacre Engineers, The
Portland Cement Association, Isbill Associates, the Naval
Facilities Engineering Command, and Harper Construction
Company where he retired (fourth time) in 2001.
He was an active member of the Gideons International,
NARFE, and a volunteer for RSVP.
His passion was boating with his family in the large lakes of
Northern Idaho, Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, and the Gulf
Islands in British Columbia. He also loved travel and ballroom
dancing.
While living in Yuma, AZ, he met and married his current wife,
Laura, at a dance. They enjoyed dancing and traveling,
including Hawaii, Cancun, Mexico, train trip through the
Canadian Rockies, Panama Canal, and the river cruise from
Vienna to Amsterdam.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife,
Carolyn; his second wife, Beverly; sister, Charlotte Lee
Bullivant, and brother, Jerry M. Miller. He is survived by his
wife, Laura; daughters, Marilyn Miller of Longview, WA, and
Virginia L. (Bob) Hamm of Jeffersonville, IN; “inherited” sons,
Russell (Marnie) Dent, and Cecil (Kathy) Dent of Friday
Harbor, WA; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces,
Susan Smith of Bellingham, WA, and Diana (Mike) Henderson
of Hermiston, OR, and nephew, John Bullivant of Spokane, WA.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday,
March 17, at First Presbyterian Church, 3940 27-1/2 Road,
