2017. She was born on February
2, 1924, in Topeka, Kansas
to Frank Monroe Fleming
and Anne Elizabeth
(Ausherman) Fleming. She
was the fourth of five children.
Melva married the love of her life, Gifford David Marney, on
May 19, 1942, in Topeka, Kansas. They lived in St. Louis, Missouri
where she worked while Gifford was in the Army. Then
they moved to Charleston, Missouri before moving to Kansas.
In 1957 they moved with their five children to Glenwood
Springs. Melva remained at home to care for their children
while Gifford worked. In 1966 they built a new home south of
Glenwood and opened the Sopris View Shoe Repair, which they
ran together.
Melva remained in their home after Gifford’s passing in 1974
until her move to New Castle in 1992. Her hobbies were babysitting
many of her grandchildren, gardening, fishing, traveling,
cooking and doing dishes. She was known as the “Chocolate
Lady”. Anyone who came to her door always had to have a chocolate
kiss before they left. She considered us all her children and
she was the best mother-in-law in the world. Melva was a member
of the Eastern Star Erica Chapter 69.
Melva is preceded in death by her loving husband, Gifford; parents;
