Ed C. Johnson Passed Away at New Mexico Home

A pioneer cowman of Eagle died of a heart attack at his home near Raton, N. M., last Saturday morning, when Ed Johnson passed away a few hours before starting for a visit to Eagle. Ed Johnson was one of the first men on the Western Slope of Colorado to run a herd of pure bred Hereford cattle, and his herd was known throughout the country for its top quality, and his cattle were sought by breeders all over the country. His former ranch west of Eagle, purchased recently by Ross Chambers, is still known as “the Johnson ranch.” He was vice-president and manager of the TO ranch near Raton, and it had become as famous under his management as had the ranch near Eagle. Funeral services were held Tuesday and he was laid to rest in Raton.

Family

Edward C. (Ed) Johnson, 73-year-old former manager of the TO ranch, died suddenly about 8 a.m. today. Physicians blamed a heart attack for his death. Johnson, who retired as manager more than a year ago to become vice president of the big ranch corporation, had been out on the range and was reported to have complained of not feeling well. He had decided to come to Raton to see his doctor. He was sitting in a chair in his home at the TO ranch when he suddenly went limp and fell from the chair. He died shortly afterward. There was no immediate word about funeral arrangements. Born in Atlantic, IA, March 29, 1875, Johnson had been on the TO ranch about 24 years. He became nationally knows as the manager of a ranch which consistently bred America's finest Hereford cattle; TO ranch-bred Herefords have taken top cattle prizes for years at such events as the Chicago International, Kansas City American Royal, and Denver National. Johnson was a lifelong bachelor.
