Graveside services for Douglas L. Hughes of Gypsum were held Thursday, Nov. 16 at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Gypsum. Mr. Hughes died at home Nov. 12 following a long illness. He was 67. He was born Dec. 28, 1921 in Grandfield, OK the son of Jack and Melba Hughes. He grew up in Glenwood Springs, attended schools in Glenwood Springs and New Castle, and graduated from Glenwood Springs High School where he was active in sports. Mr. Hughes served in the U.S. Army infantry during World War II and was stations in Europe under General George Patton. He returned to St. Paul, Minn. where he married Hazel M. Pearson on Sept. 13, 1945. Mr. Hughes moved his family back to Glenwood Springs in 1961. He worked as a carpenter in Glenwood Springs and later in Vail. Surviving are his wife, Nazel Hughes of Gypsum, Susan Chapman of Austin, NV; four sons, Douglas of Las Vegas, David of Green River, WY, James of Denver, and Jeffrey of Silverthorne; his mother, Melba Coulter of Glenwood Springs, 7 grandchildren.
