Small Lad Killed by Auto

ERNEST HUGHES HIT BY CAR ON MINTURN STREET WEDNESDAY—DIES LATER IN GILMAN HOSPITAL.

A small boy died at the Gilman hospital Thursday of last week from injuries received when he was struck by an automobile in front of his home in Minturn Wednesday afternoon. Ernest Hughes, 7-year-old son of Flossie and George Hughes, was hit by a car driven by Ezequiel Man-: chego of Saguache, on the main high-! way that runs past the Hughes home in Minturn late Wedensday afternoon, shortly after the lad had returned from school. He was taken to the_ Gilman hospital, where he was found to be wounded internally, and died the following afternoon. The fender of the car caught the boy and threw him under the car, and both front and rear wheels passed over his body. He is survived by his parents and eight brothers and sisters, all of whom were present for funeral services on Sunday, but one brother, Floyd, who is serving with the army overseas. The driver of the car was arrested immediately following the accident on a charge of reckless driving by Courtesy Patrolman Oren Doolan,, who, with district Attorney Wm. J. Meehan, were but a few yards behind the Manchego car at the time. It was later reported, when the buy died, that a charge of involuntary manslaughter would be filed in the district court, when Manchego is arraigned next Monday. He has employed Attorney M. J. Mayes of Glenwood Springs to defend him. Ernest Clifton Hughes was one of nine children, and was born on Dec. 1, 1937, at the Gilman hospital, and had lived in Minturn with his mothei since birth. Surviving are Mrs. Hughes of Minturn, Mr. Hughes of Grand Junction; five sisters, Daisy Crain, Leona, Helen, and Maxine of Minturn, and Ethel Hatmaker of Grand Junction; three brothers— Carl, U. S. navy, San Francisco; Ralph, Portland, Ore.; and Floyd, U. S. army, overseas. Rev. yHenry Baker of the Methodist church in Glenwood held funeral services in the Minturn church where the building was packed with sorrowing and sympathizing friends. Monday afternoon, April 9. Burial was also at Minturn.
