Nolie S. Covey went to be
with the Lord on Monday,
April 17, 2017. His final days
were spent lovingly
surrounded by his wife and
family. In his death, we lost a
loving husband, father,
grandfather and most
importantly, a godly man.
Nolie was born on October
31, 1921, in Grenville, NM to
Joseph A. and Iva Lela (Steele) Covey. He was the fifth of eight
children. The family moved to Clifton, Colorado when Nolie
was 13 and he and his father and brothers worked in Palisade
peach orchards during the Great Depression of the 1930’s.
Mr. Covey joined the United States Army Air Corps during
World War II and served as a Technical Sergeant. He spent the
latter part of the war serving in the South Pacific, stationed on
the Island of Tinian, overseeing the loading of bombs on B29’s.
When the war was over, Nolie returned to Clifton, Colorado and
married his sweetheart, Eileen E. Atchison, on May 19, 1946.
He was a devoted husband and father, and they enjoyed over 70
married years together. Their love and affection for one another
is a lasting testament to their entire family and those around
them.
Nolie learned the carpenter trade upon his return from WWII
and became a successful businessman. He also was the
chairman of a citizen committee that applied for and received a
government grant founding the Clifton Sanitation District. In his
retirement years, he returned to his love of farming, moved to
Palisade and raised and sold peaches. He and his wife, Eileen,
enjoyed this activity together and they operated a local fruit
stand until just a few years ago.
Nolie is survived by his wife, Eileen; daughters, Lela (Dru)
Bishop and Brenda (Nick) Flanagan; 11 grandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild.
He is preceded in death by son, Nolie Howard Covey, his
parents and his siblings.
Committal services will take place at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the
Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. Memorial
services will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the Palisade Church of the
Nazarene.
Memorial contributions can be made to HopeWest, 3090B N.
12th St., Grand Junction, 81506.
