Elgia S. "Frog" LaGrow 1921-1991

Elgia S. "Frog" La Grow Jr. of Gypsum, Colorado died Tuesday, November 12th at the age of 70. He was born September 20, 1921 in Binford, No. Dak. to Elgia S. La Grow Sr. and Anna Gertrude Mathews La Grow. As a young child, Elgia and his family moved to Colorado where his father worked on the Wolherst Ranch. Elgia attended the Bear Creek School, graduated from high school. The family later moved to Kremmling and then to Edwards where at the age of 18 Elgia left home. He decided to go into mining, working for the Walker Min Co. of California. He worked there until the mine closed.

Elgia met his future wife, the former Ilene Gamble in Utah and they were married on March 27, 1942 in Eureka, Utah. After moving to Leadville, CO Elgia was drafted and served in the U.S. Army. After he was discharged, he went into construction and worked at this until about 22 years ago when he moved to the farm in Gypsum and farmed. Elgia La Grow loved construction work and also enjoyed mining for gold. He loved the deer around his farm but would not hunt them.

Elgia S. La Grow is preceded in death by his parents and a son, Laddie James. He is survived by his wife Ilene in Gypsum, 2 sons, Elgia S. La Grow III (Delaine) in Henderson, Nev. and Gene Paul La Grow (Jeannie Ann) in Gypsum. 1 daughter, Ruby Ilene Erickson in Fresno, CA. 4 sisters, Trudy L. High (Herb) in Grand Junction, Betty Stene (Roger) in Littleton. Mary Alie Greenman in Gypsum, and Evelyn J. Horn in Wolcott.

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Elgia, Michael, Tracey, Regina K., Tory, Ilene, C.V. Morgray, Le Anda, and Levi and 2 great grandchildren, Holly and Ryan.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, November 16 at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Gypsum. The Reverand Philip Green officiated and Linda Jodrie sang and was accompanied by Margaret Collett.

Elgia Sylvester LaGrow was born Sept 4, 1922 in Binford, North Dakota to Elgia and Gertrude LaGrow. He lived most of his young life in Littleton and Edwards, Colorado.
Elgia Then moved to Utah and married Ilene Gamble, joined the army in Portland Oregon. Ilene moved to Leadville, Colo until his discharge. Their oldest son, Elgia Sylvester III was born in Eagle, Colorado at the older Forster Hotel. They then moved back to Utah. The other children, Laddie, Jamer(?), and Ruby Ilene, his parents and Laddie preceded him in death. They moved back to Colo in about 1973. He had three sisters, Anna Gertrude, Betty Mary Alice and Evelyn Joyce LaGrow. He was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Gypsum. -- from letter dated August 19, 2006
