Vergilio Red Lovato, longtime resident of Red Cliff and former miner, has died. He was 83.

Lovato, who was born in Rodarte, New Mexico, worked at the New Jersey Zinc Mine in Gilman for 30 years. He doubled as an amateur barber at the mine, cuttnig all of his co-workers' hair. He retired in 1972.

Lovato, who was an avid fisherman and also loved playing guitar, married the former Cordilia Leyba Lovato in 1940. The couple raised nine children.

Lovato was preceded in death by his parents, Amado and Sarita Lovato; his sons, Raynaldo, who died in 1972, and Jessie, who died in 1953; and his brother, Alberto Lovato. He is survived by his wife, Cordilia of Red Cliff; his three sons, Harvey Lovato and his wife Florence, of Dillon, Ronnie Lovato and his wife, JOsie of Leadville, and Amado Lovato and his wife Jessie, of Red Cliff; his four daughters, Mary Jaramillo and her husband, Horicio, of Red Cliff, Grave Rivera and husband Francisco of Leadville, Irene Rivet and husband Steve of Eagle and Agnes Sandoval of Eagle. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren. There will be a visitation Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Leadville.
