Mary Kathrine Singleton
May 25, 1920 - May 30, 2017
Miki went on to meet her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at HopeWest Hospice Inpatient unit in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Mary Kathrine Singleton was born May 25, 1920, to Dr. Neal Loomis and Katherine Hulley Loomis, in Marion, Indiana. Mary K. (Miki to her family and friends)
began school in Indiana, but graduated from high school in
Yuba City, California; the family had moved there for her
father’s medical practice. She studied at Oregon State College
and the University of California at Berkley. In 1942, she
graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital Diploma School of Nursing
in San Francisco.
In 1944, she married Dr. Paul Singleton, who served in the US
Navy in World War II. After the war, they settled in Corrigan,
Texas, where Paul set up his practice as the "only" town doctor.
Miki stayed busy with church, school, and community activities,
as well as caring for their two children. The family moved to
Houston in 1957, where Paul opened his own office and Miki
served as his nurse, secretary, and bookkeeper. To be closer to
their four grandchildren, Miki and Paul retired to Vernon, Texas
in 1981. In this small town, Miki thrived. She was an active
member of the Art League, the Red River Valley Museum guild,
and Carnegie Library. She volunteered for many community
projects and served the First Presbyterian Church as an elder
and in countless other ways.
Miki remained in Vernon until her own health concerns at the
age of 91 prompted a move to Grand Junction, Colorado. She
lived at the Atrium until she suffered a stroke in 2015.
Afterwards, she chose The Beehive, which provided a home-like atmosphere at an assisted living residence.
An avid reader and incredible artist, Miki created scores of oil
paintings which now decorate the homes of numerous friends
and family members. She poured herself into each of her
paintings, and even kept a photo album of all of her "babies" to
show the variety of her work. Miki wrote short stories and
poetry while in college, and enjoyed writing letters on a regular
basis to many people. She loved to watch horse racing, football,
and baseball. The Astrodome was built close to her house and
the family attended many games there. She was a Houston
Oilers fan and Astros fan, but enjoyed following the Dallas
Cowboys. Once moving to Colorado, she embraced the
Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos.
Miki was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John
Loomis, and sister, Elizabeth Murphy. Her husband died in
1985, and they had lost their first child, Kathryn, in 1946 (aged
six months). Miki is survived by son, George (Theresa)
Singleton of Lamar, Arkansas; step-granddaughter, Chanda
(Andy) Adams, and two great-granddaughters. Miki is also
survived by daughter, Martha Singleton Brown of Glade Park,
CO, and her four children, Paul (Lynne) Brown of Norfolk, VA;
Andrew (Kelsey) Brown of Glade Park, CO; Matthew (Carolyn)
Brown of Ft Collins, CO, and Rebecca (Jennifer) Longmore of
Greeley, CO; as well as four great-grandchildren, Lizzy, Juliet,
Katherine, and Noah.
Grand Valley Funeral Home has kindly taken care of cremation
and a private service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Volunteer Fire
