DAVID MARTINEZ KILLED IN ACCIDENT
David Joe Martinez, Red Cliff man was killed instantly when, his car skidded out of control near Leadville Thursday night, and seven passengers injured. The accident happened west o< the Pine Club near Leadville when the carload of young people were enroute to Leadville to attend a holiday dance- The car hit an icy spot in the road and according to Patrolman Tom McAuliffe, apparently Martinez applied his brakes at the same time- The car skidded off the left side of the road and turned over two and a half times before it came to rest on its side. Martinez- was thrown out of the car. but his head and chest were pinned underneath the car when it stopped rolling- Two Camp Hale soldiers came along a short time later, and helped to right the car. and take the injured to a Leadville hospital. Injured were Peter Roybal. Red Cliff, severe head injury; Phil Martinez, 22, Minturn, back injuries; Alesandro Valdez, 23. Minturn, 6ut op left hand; Augustine Montano, 24 Red Cliff, severe head cuts; Regina Garcia, 20, Red Cliff head lacerations; Arthur Martinez. 17, head cuts: Phillip N Montoya, 21. Minturn, head injuries. All but Roybal were released from the hospital. David Martinez was the son of Mr and Mrs Manuel Martinez of Red Cliff, and was 20 years of age at the time of his death. He was a gradu ate of the Red Cliff Union High School in 1949, where he took a star role in athletics- He was employed at the Empire Zinc Company at Gilman prior to his death. Surviving are the parents, and seven sisters and two brothers- One brother preceded him in death. Funeral services were held November 27 at 10:00 a. m. in Our "Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church” by Rev- Ramon Blach. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Red Cliff under direction of Moynahan and O’ Malia Funeral Directors of Leadville Pallbearers were Jake Martinez.
